The surprising benefactor behind Nigel Farage's recent trip to Davos has been revealed, sparking questions about the funding of political figures and their international engagements.
This week, Nigel Farage, the prominent leader of Reform UK, was a notable presence at the prestigious World Economic Forum in Davos. While he was delivering speeches advocating for policies like taxing banks and challenging what he termed "globalists," his attendance was not self-funded. Instead, his journey was hosted and fully financed by the substantial family trust of an Iranian-born billionaire, a fact that has now come to light.
But here's where it gets particularly interesting: Farage's name appeared on the official World Economic Forum program not just as a political leader, but also as a representative of HP Trust. This entity, which describes itself as the "family office of Sasan Ghandehari," boasts a staggering portfolio valued at over $10 billion (approximately £7.4 billion).
A spokesperson for HP Trust confirmed that Sasan Ghandehari, a venture capitalist, personally invited Farage to Davos. Ghandehari views Farage as an honorary, unpaid advisor for his impact investment portfolio, which has a strong focus on philanthropic initiatives, particularly in the Middle East. Crucially, Ghandehari covered all expenses related to Farage's World Economic Forum registration and his hotel accommodation in Davos.
Sasan Ghandehari, who is now a British citizen, is the son of the late Hourieh Peramaa, a billionaire with Iranian-Kazakh heritage. His mother was once the owner of one of London's most opulent properties, valued at a remarkable £50 million. Ghandehari himself is an art collector based in London and is also involved in a legal dispute with the renowned Christie's auction house concerning the authenticity of a Picasso painting that was previously owned by an individual convicted of drug offenses.
Reform UK has stated that Nigel Farage does not work for HP Trust and that any financial arrangements for his trip will be duly declared in due course.
And this is the part most people miss... Farage's connection to HP Trust isn't the only financial link between Reform UK and the Ghandehari family. Earlier this year, it was reported that a relatively low-profile design firm named Interior Architecture Landscape made a significant donation of £200,000 to Reform UK, split into two payments. Electoral Commission data confirms these contributions. While the firm keeps a low profile, planning documents from 2015 indicated it represented a property associated with the Ghandehari family.
Interior Architecture Landscape has since confirmed that the Ghandehari family are indeed their clients. However, a spokesperson for the firm emphasized that the decision to donate £200,000 to Reform UK was made independently by the company's management, and not at the behest of the Ghandehari family.
Similarly, the spokesperson for Ghandehari affirmed that the family is a client of Interior Architecture Landscape but clarified they were not responsible for the political donations.
The spokesperson for Interior Architecture Landscape further elaborated, stating that the company manages approximately £15 million in active contracts for maintenance, refurbishment, and fit-out work across various UK properties. They reiterated that all members of the company's management, decision-makers, and clients are British citizens, and that the company operates legitimate business activities within the United Kingdom. Consequently, any political donations made by the company are fully compliant with current electoral laws.
They added that the company's management made a "commercial and values-based decision" to donate to Reform UK, believing that the party's objectives align with improving the sectors in which the company operates.
According to Companies House records, the individual with significant control over Interior Architecture Landscape is listed as John Richard Simpson.
